  1. AUDI 75 1968 Building carefully on the success of the new 90 introduced in 1966, Audi started to expand its range. The two and four door saloon versions were joined by a five-door estate to meet the growing demands for more space inside. Changes to the high-swirl engine gave more power from the 1.7 litres, with the 75 title referring to the DIN power output in bhp. Audis of the period were unusual in using torsion bar independent suspension front and rear. But with a high proportion of the car's weight being carried over the front wheels, they did suffer from understeer when being driven quickly on twisting roads. The estate car, with its neatly sloping tailgate and big windows, accounted for a remarkably high percentage of sales. The 75 range remained on sale until 1972. BODY 2/4 door saloon, 5 door estate; 5 seats; weight 1025kg (2255lb). 2. AUDI SUPER 90 1966 The Super 90 set new standards in both performance and equipment. The engine with the Heron high swirl piston combustion chamber was retained, with the larger capacity now giving 67kW The very high compression ratio of the smaller capacity designs was reduced slightly, but was still far greater than that used by most competitors. The basic front wheel drive design lacked the refinement of later models, while the firm ride was typical of German cars of the period. Despite the superior performance, the Super 90 stayed with the same disc front, drum rear braking system layout used in the other cars in the range. The 90 and the later 75 exemplified the conservative side of Audi styling, changing car shapes subtly and slowly, each new feature evolving rather than appearing suddenly. BODY 2/4 door saloon; 5 door estate; 5 seats; weight 1030kg (2266Ib). ENGINE 4 cylinders, in line; front; 81.5x84.4, 1760cc; compr 10.6:1; 67kW (90bhp) @ 5200rpm; 37.8kW /I (50.8bhp/l); 147Nm (15.0mkp) @ 3000rpm. 3. AUTO UNION AUDI D-B Heron 1965 After 26 years the Audi name was resurrected, although much of the car was not altogether new. The conservatively-styled body, similar to the DKW F-102, was a move up-market from the curvy two-stroke models. Where the Audi differed was in its engine design. Front wheel drive was retained, but now there was a four cylinder, four-stroke engine providing the power. Designed by Daimler-Benz, it featured some very advanced engineering. Instead of the combustion chambers being in the cylinder head, they were in the piston crowns, with a very high-turbulence induction design allowing a high compression ratio of 11.2:1 to be used. The layout, with the engine hung out ahead of the front axle line, and with the four-speed allsynchromesh gearbox in unit with the final drive, was to become an Audi feature for many years. The move to a four stroke engine gave Audi a clean break from the two-stroke image created by DKW It quickly moved to re-occupy the ground left vacant by the middle-class low-volume, premium-priced cars of the pre-war Auto Union. BODY Saloon; 214 doors; 5 seats; weight 980kg (21561b). ENGINE 4 cylinders, in line; front; 80.0x84.4mm, 1696cc; compr 11.2:1; 54kW (72bhp) @ 5000rpm; 31.8kW 11 (31.8bhp/l); 127Nm (13.0mkp) @ 2800rpm.
