The conservatively-styled body, similar to the DKW F-102, was a move up-market from the curvy two-stroke models. Where the Audi differed was in its engine design. Front wheel drive was retained, but now there was a four cylinder, four-stroke engine providing the power. Designed by Daimler-Benz, it featured some very advanced engineering. Instead of the combustion chambers being in the cylinder head, they were in the piston crowns, with a very high-turbulence induction design allowing a high compression ratio of 11.2:1 to be used. The layout, with the engine hung out ahead of the front axle line, and with the four-speed allsynchromesh gearbox in unit with the final drive, was to become an Audi feature for many years. The move to a four stroke engine gave Audi a clean break from the two-stroke image created by DKW It quickly moved to re-occupy the ground left vacant by the middle-class low-volume, premium-priced cars of the pre-war Auto Union.
